Chinguetti is a city in Mauritania located to the east of the state of Adara, Mauritania. It was founded in the 2nd century. It is a historical city that lived for centuries of prosperity before it fell and was buried. The current city of Chinguetti rose in its place, which was founded in 1262 AD. The origin of the name Chinguetti goes back to the Berbers or Berbers, meaning the horse’s eye, and it was ancient. The starting point for the caravans of pilgrims heading to Mecca, passing through Egypt and Sudan. This is one of the reasons that deepened cultural relations with the Arab-Islamic countries. The city of Chinguetti includes many libraries that contributed greatly to protecting manuscripts of the works of some of the first Muslim scholars. They are mostly private libraries that are passed down in families over the generations to preserve them. Maintaining their valuable content, these libraries attract researchers and academics interested in studying the Islamic cultural heritage in West Africa.
